Sequence and Collaboration Diagrams

Sequence diagrams emphasize time. Collaboration diagrams, also called communication diagrams, emphasize linked objects and numbered messages.

START WITH THIS QUESTION

Do you need time order or object links to explain the interaction?

What you should be able to do

  • Model one scenario in both views.
  • Explain the message order and participating objects.

Terms to use precisely

lifelinemessageactivationlinkmessage numbering

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a collaboration diagram as a compressed sequence diagram.
UML VIEW SWITCHER

The same system needs different views.

Switch the question first. Then choose the diagram whose notation answers it.

SEQUENCE

Time is the main question.

  1. Student → Web client: choose diagram
  2. Web client → Learning service: request content
  3. Learning service → Content store: retrieve lesson
  4. Learning service → Web client: render lesson
COLLABORATION

Object links are the main question.

Student ↔ Web client ↔ Learning service ↔ Content store

  1. 1: chooseDiagram()
  2. 1.1: requestContent()
  3. 1.1.1: retrieveLesson()
  4. 1.2: renderLesson()
INTERACTIVE UML LAB

Take this idea into the diagram.

The lab uses familiar systems so you can inspect every actor, relationship, message and ownership handoff.

CHECKED LEARNING LINKS

Watch the part that solves the gap.

Each link is matched to this lesson. Start with a quick video when available. Open the full lecture when you need the academic explanation.
